Designing a Fat Analog-Style Bass in Serum From a Single Sine Wave
There’s a moment in every producer’s life when you realize you don’t need a sample pack to get a thick bass — you just need one oscillator and the will to push it. Serum gets called a wavetable king, and rightfully so (it’s the synth most of us reach for first when we need something quick and versatile), but that reputation sometimes buries the obvious: you can start from a raw sine and end up with a bass that sits like a record. Not a “close enough” record. An actual one.
The trick isn’t a secret preset. It’s knowing which knobs actually thicken the sound and which ones just add mud. Here’s how I build a fat analog-style bass in Serum from a single sine wave, step by step, and why each move matters.
Why start with a sine at all?
A sine wave is the purest thing you can load into a synth — a single fundamental with no overtones riding on top. That sounds boring until you understand the subtractive logic underneath it: a sine is a blank source that you shape entirely with subtraction — an envelope, an amplifier, a filter. That’s the whole architecture classical subtractive synthesis runs on, where a filter’s cutoff and an amplifier’s envelope carve a sound into existence rather than you sculpting it directly.
Serum ships with a dirty sub-oscillator built in, and that’s your low-end anchor from the first second. So the plan is simple: use one wavetable oscillator loaded with a sine shape as your “body,” let the sub handle the mass, then make them move together. Two layers, one bass.
Setting up the patch (the part most people rush)
1. Start with a clean sine in Osc A
Load Osc A, choose the basic sine wavetable, and set it to a single unison voice. Resist the urge to turn on unison here — you’ll add movement later. Set the octave to -1 so your sine sits in the bass register. Turn Osc B off entirely for now. This is the “one sine wave” starting point, and keeping it isolated in the beginning makes everything you do afterward easier to hear.
If your sub-oscillator is on by default, drop it one octave below Osc A and pull its level so it’s sitting just under the sine, not competing with it. The sub gives you weight; the sine gives you character. You want them stacked, not fighting.
2. Shape the amp envelope
This is where the bass actually becomes a bass. Head to the ENV 1 (Amp) section and dial in something tight: a fast attack (near zero), a short decay, low sustain, and a short release. A longer decay with a reduced sustain is what gives a plucked or punchy feel — that’s not a Serum quirk, it’s the standard envelope behavior you find on any analog-style synth. You want the note to hit and then get out of the way.
The mistake I see constantly: leaving sustain at 100%. Your bass then smears into the next note and the low end turns into soup. Pull that sustain down. Let the envelope breathe.
3. Give it analog movement with a filter
Serum’s strength is its gargantuan filter section — dozens of filter types beyond the standard low, high, and band pass options. For an analog-flavored bass, reach for one of the low-pass filters and don’t over-filter. A gentle 12 dB slope keeps warmth; a sharper 24 dB slope packs more punch but can rob the sine of its body.
Now here’s the real trick: assign an envelope to the filter cutoff. Use a second envelope (ENV 2) with a slightly slower attack than the amp envelope and a modest decay. As the note blooms, the filter opens and closes — that’s the movement that makes a static sine feel alive. This is dragging the envelope onto the cutoff in the modulation matrix, and in Serum that takes about three seconds because the drag-and-drop workflow is genuinely one of the reasons it remains the go-to for so many producers. You can modulate almost anything with almost anything, and that’s the whole game for analog character.
Making a single sine sound “fat”
Here’s where it gets fun. A single sine is thin by definition — it’s one frequency. You thicken it with three tools: unison, detune, and subtle saturation. Each adds width or harmonics; each can also wreck your mix if you overdo it.
- Unison voices: Turn on unison on Osc A with 2–3 voices and a detune amount around 10–20%. That slight pitch offset between voices creates a beating motion, which is the classic “two oscillators slightly out of tune” analog feel. Push the detune too far and it turns into a saw-stack smear.
- Slight pitch drift via LFO: Assign an LFO to fine pitch with a very low amount and slow rate. It emulates oscillator drift — the tiny tuning instability that real analog hardware has and pure digital synths don’t. Keep it subtle; you’re imitating a warm imperfection, not a detuned disaster.
- Saturation in the FX rack: One of Serum’s 10 effect rack units is a saturation/distortion. A light drive adds harmonics that make the sine feel bigger through the speakers, especially on small monitors. Important: keep saturation before your main filter so the added harmonics get shaped, not just stacked on top.
There’s a caveat here that Serum users know well: Serum doesn’t inherently sound “analog” the way something like u-he Diva does — Diva is the reference point for authentic warmth, at a real CPU cost. Serum is a digital synth first. But with these three moves — unison detune, drift modulation, and gentle saturation — you close most of that gap. You’re not going to fool anyone into thinking it’s a Moog, but you’ll get a bass that sounds warm, thick, and decidedly analog in character.
The sub vs. sine balancing act
Sub and sine occupy overlapping frequency ranges, and if you’re not careful they’ll sum into a boomy mess. Here’s my rule of thumb:
- Let the sub carry the very lowest frequencies — that’s its job.
- Use a high-pass on the sine layer only if it’s muddying things, and only cut the sub-bass it shouldn’t own.
- Watch your mono compatibility — check the patch in mono. Detuned unison and stereo width disappear or phase-cancel in mono, so if the bass vanishes when you sum the channels, pull the detune back.
This is the step where a “fat” patch that sounded huge in your headphones turns out to be a phase problem on a club system. Always test in mono before you commit.
Adding character without losing the low end
Once the fundamental is solid, you can layer in subtle extras. A touch of noise from Serum’s flexible noise generator at a low level adds air and bite, especially if you modulate its level with an envelope so it only appears on the attack. That transient click is what makes a bass cut through a dense mix.
If you want to go further, drag a slight bit of distortion onto just the upper harmonics using a multiband approach — distort the highs, leave the sub clean. Fat analog bass is rarely one pure layer; it’s a clean sub underneath a character layer on top.
Why this approach is worth learning
You could grab any of Serum’s 400-plus factory patches and find a bass that works. But building one from a single sine teaches you the actual mechanics: how an envelope shapes a note, how a filter adds movement, how detune creates width, how saturation adds weight. That knowledge transfers to every synth you’ll ever open, free or not.
And honestly, this is the underrated side of Serum. Everyone talks about the wavetable engine and the modulation matrix — both genuinely excellent — but the ability to take the most basic waveform in existence and turn it into a bass that holds down a track is what makes it a tool you keep coming back to. Start with the sine. Add the sub. Move the filter. Tune the detune. Then check it in mono.
Do that ten times and you’ll have ten basses that sound like you, not like a preset someone else already used on three records. That’s the whole point.
