Sidechain Compression: How to Stop Your Kick and Bass From Fighting
You’ve got a kick that hits like a fist and a bassline that carries the whole groove. Together, they turn your mix into mud. That low-end tug-of-war is the single most common problem I run into when I’m mixing — and the fix is almost always the same: sidechain compression. Done right, it’s the difference between a low end that breathes and a low end that fights itself. Done sloppily, it leaves you with clicks, constant pumping where you didn’t ask for it, and a bass that sounds nervous. Let’s walk through how to actually get it right.
What Sidechain Compression Actually Does
Sidechain compression uses one signal to control the compression happening on another. In the classic kick-and-bass scenario, the kick drum triggers a compressor sitting on your bass track. When the kick hits, the bass ducks. When the kick stops, the bass comes back to its normal level. That’s the whole idea, and it’s been a standard move in mixing for a long time.
What matters is that this is a dynamic relationship. The bass isn’t permanently carved down the way it would be with an EQ cut — it keeps its full frequency content in the spaces between kicks and only gives ground when the kick actually needs the room. That’s why it’s so much more musical than just scooping 60 Hz out of your bassline and calling it a day. If you’ve ever EQ’d the life out of a bass to make a kick poke through, you already know why ducking is the better trade.
Worth keeping straight: purists draw a line between “ducking” and “sidechain pumping.” Ducking is attenuation by a specific, fixed range. Sidechain compression produces variable attenuation that moves with the source. In practice most of us use the terms interchangeably, and the underlying move — one track ducking another to combat masking — is the same trick used on bass guitars, synth basses, and even reverb returns. Portishead and Adele records both lean on ducking; it shows up everywhere once you start listening for it.
Dialing In Attack and Release
Attack and release are where most people get into trouble. The rest of the compressor is honestly more forgiving.
Attack: You want the bass to duck fast enough to clear space for the kick’s initial transient. If your attack is too slow, the bass masks that very first crack of the kick and you lose the punch you were trying to protect. Fast attack times around 1–5 ms get you there. But go too fast and the bass level jumps abruptly enough to produce an audible click. If you hear clicking, back off to roughly 5–10 ms — still quick, but smooth enough to avoid artifacts. The threshold between “effective” and “clicky” is material-dependent, so trust your ears, not a number you read online.
Release: This is the setting that separates clean sidechaining from that seasick, constantly-ducked bass. Your release should complete before the next kick hits. If it doesn’t, the ducking accumulates and your bass never fully recovers — it just sits there squashed the whole time. For moderate tempos, release times around 100–200 ms usually work. Faster tempos need shorter releases, somewhere in the 50–100 ms range. The goal is simple: the bass should be back to full level before the next kick arrives.

Ratio, Threshold, and How Much Ducking You Actually Want
Ratio and threshold together determine how hard the bass ducks — and this is where genre and taste take over.
- Subtle sidechaining (2–4 dB of reduction) gives you separation without an obvious effect. This is the transparent approach that suits rock, pop, country, and most other styles where audible pumping would sound wrong. The listener perceives clarity in the low end without ever hearing the mechanism.
- Aggressive sidechaining (6–10 dB or more) produces that pumping, breathing effect that defines electronic and dance music. Here the “artifact” is the point — it becomes part of the groove and adds energy rather than hiding.
Threshold placement decides what triggers the duck. A lower threshold means even ghost notes and lighter kicks set off the compression; a higher threshold means only the loudest hits get through. Let the playing dynamics guide you. If your kick part is fairly even, this is straightforward. If it’s a dynamic performance with soft and hard hits, a low threshold can leave you ducking on everything and wondering why the bass feels pinned down.
When Plain Sidechain Isn’t Enough: Multiband and Frequency-Conscious Options
The kick and bass usually conflict in the sub range, but plenty of your bass’s character lives higher up — and a broadband sidechain ducks all of it. That’s wasteful. Multiband sidechain compression ducks only the frequencies that actually fight with the kick. You can hammer the low band down hard while leaving the upper bass mostly untouched, so you keep the bass’s attack and definition while still carving out sub-bass separation.
Frequency-conscious tools take this further. Plugins like Trackspacer analyze which frequencies the kick occupies and apply bass reduction only in those ranges — automatically frequency-dependent ducking rather than you drawing the split yourself. Better Sidechain Sources
Sometimes the problem isn’t your compressor, it’s your trigger. A full-range kick feeding the sidechain can confuse the detector with sub content that has nothing to do with the transient you’re trying to protect. A high-pass filtered kick triggers more cleanly. If your kick dynamics vary a lot, a dedicated trigger track — a simple click or pulse aligned to your kicks — gives you consistent triggering regardless of how hard the drummer hit.
The cleanest option of all is MIDI-triggered sidechain, where the compressor responds to MIDI notes instead of detected audio. No false triggers, perfect timing, total control. It’s more setup, but if you’re programming electronic music, it’s a real advantage.
Don’t Sidechain Your Way Out of a Bad Arrangement
Here’s the part that gets skipped in most tutorials: sidechain compression is damage control, not a substitute for a clean low end to begin with. If you want a powerful but not overloaded bottom, get your foundation right first. Keep one bass and one kick in the low-frequency range. Ideally they sit mostly in different bands to begin with — and if they genuinely share frequencies, then sidechain the bass under the kick. That’s when ducking does its best work.
Just as important: keep other instruments out of those low frequencies. If your pad, your piano, or your layered synth is also hanging out down there, you’re not solving a kick-vs-bass problem — you’re solving a five-way pileup, and no compressor setting will save you. Layering in the bass range is another trap. Kick layering can absolutely work, but layering bass tracks nearly always creates chaos, with some notes jumping out and others vanishing. It’s a mistake I see constantly from newer producers chasing a “bigger” low end and ending up with a mess instead.
EQ has its place, but when two instruments genuinely fight over the same range, EQ’ing one out of the way substantially damages it. That’s exactly why sidechain ducking earns its keep: it solves the conflict moment-by-moment instead of permanently gutting your bass.
A Practical Starting Point
If you’re dialing this in right now, here’s a sane sequence. Route your kick to the bass compressor’s sidechain input. Start with a moderate ratio and aim for 3–4 dB of gain reduction on the bass. Attack around 3–5 ms — fast, but not clicking. Release timed so the bass recovers just before the next kick, or switch on auto-release and let the compressor figure it out. Set your threshold so your main kicks trigger ducking and your ghost notes mostly don’t. Then use your ears: if you can hear the effect, either it’s too much or you’re in a genre that wants it. If the bass feels glued to the floor, your release is too long.
Get those four parameters pointing the same direction and your kick and bass stop fighting. The bass keeps its weight, the kick keeps its punch, and the low end finally sounds like one instrument instead of two people arguing in a small room.
